The new season for Diablo 4, Season of the Infernal Chaos, starts on Tuesday, September 23. Before the release of this new season, the development team sat down for their Developer Livestream on Tuesday, September 16, to go over what players can expect in the new season and what they learned during the Public Test Realm (PTR).

The new season will bring permanent updates to eternal and season realms in the Infernal Hordes with chaos waves and Bartuc, Lord of Chaos, who will also be an all-new boss fight that players have to master.

Storyline

The storyline for the new season will take place after disturbing events in Ked Bardu. There you will meet the assassin Shyan who is part of the order Viz-Jaq'taar which eliminate demon-corrupted mages. This order was created after the Mage Clan Wars, which was a brutal conflict that happened in Sanctuary's past. Viz-Jaq'taar now seek out the source of Chaos Rifts across Sanctuary.

When playing the new season, you can start the questline Sands of Chaos in Ked Bardu and speak to the distraught villager to join the hunt. You must make a Seasonal character to play this new season during character creation.

Infernal Hordes

One area of the new season will have players jumping back into the Infernal Hordes. There will be several added features to the Infernal Hordes: Chaos Waves, the Fell Council, and Bartuc.

Chaos Waves

When you enter the Infernal Hordes, you will have to defeat a specific number of waves to get to the end, to either defeat the Fell Council or Bartuc. These Chaos Waves will have Chaos Offerings that will appear between the waves and allow players to transform a standard wave into a volatile crucible of randomized encounters. These waves will have increased difficulty, and then you'll be rewarded more Aether, which is spent at the end of the run to open up chests with specific rewards.

These Chaos Waves will have players either dodge deadly projectiles from Chas Rifts, slay a rampaging Hellwyrm, or hunt down Aether Goblins.

The developers say they reworked the Infernal Offerings, which are revealed after each wave. The rework includes additional balancing and makes sure the offerings feel valid as choices.

Bartuc, Lord of Chaos

After completing the waves during the Infernal Hordes, players will have a choice to fight against the Fell Council or take up the Lord of Chaos, Bartuc.

If you don't choose Bartuc, you'll take on the Fell Council, which has seen some improvements. One of the members of the council will be promoted to the designated Council Speaker and have enhanced abilities.

However, if you choose to take on Bartuc, your party will need to spend Aether. The person who selects Bartuc decides for the party.

During the fight, Bartuc will summon Chaos portals to shoot projectiles and deploy an arsenal to kill you. In the fight, there are teleport pads that you can use strategically. After defeating Bartuc, rewards will appear on the ground, and you won't have to spend any additional Aether.

Chaos Armor

With the new season comes a new armor type that players can find across Sanctuary. Chaos Armor will appear in the following item slots: helm, chest, gloves, pants, and boots.

The original unique states "your attacks randomly deal 1% to 300%", but the Chaos Armor states "your attacks randomly deal 1% to 360%". However, players can't equip the same Unique item between Chaos and standard. Below is a list of general and class-based Chaos Uniques players can find during the season.
